    Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the most famous trekking destinations for travelers who like undergoing the off-the-beaten-trails trekking journeys in Nepal. Experiencing the sublimity of the third highest mountain on Earth, with its elevation of 8586 meters, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the most beautiful trekking journeys in the world. Standing in the border of Nepal and India, Mount Kanchenjunga is beautiful to look at, covered in the snowy patina of ivory. The trekking trails are also decorated beautifully with the chartreuse of emerald foliages and lush verdant trees and wooded acreages. Because of this, the trekking journey has an amazing natural quintessence about its green environments ornamented beguilingly with water-bodies and dainty villages along with the majestic views of the mountain.

The word “Kanchenjunga” is derived from the conjecture of five words in the Tibetan language that mix together to give you the single word of context. It translates to “the Five treasures of the snow”, and the mountain peak is worshipped by many inhabitants of the villages and settlements both in Nepal and in India. It lies in the eastern part of Nepal and was open to trekking only in 1988. Comparatively, trekking in the northern base camp presents more surprising views and a wide variance of the sceneries than the southern base camp. Trekking to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, you would be presented with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks as well, like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and many more. The palatial beauty of the trekking trails is also an added advantage for trekkers because of it simply marvelous natural quiddities. While making your way to the Kanchenjunga trekking in Nepal, you would also be coming across many village sand settlements along the way, and you would then be able to experience the day to day life of the local people and observe their unique customs and cultures and their rituals at the remote secluded part of the Himalayas.

Beginning the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, you would be flying to Taplejung from Kathmandu and will continue to trek to the settlement of Mitlung. Walking on narrow amethyst trails, you would be passing through different vast areas of vibrant plant life brimming with the vegetation of cardamom shrubs and rhododendron trees. As you reach Chirwa, you would be presented with the sights of the mystical forests and wonderful woodlands that posses many different types of flora and fauna idiosyncratic to this region of Nepal. Trudging along some more beautiful cardamom meadows, you would be approaching the dainty village of Sukathum.

Ornamented beguilingly with the vibrancy of the jaded landscape, you would be trekking along the trails that pass through the verdant forests rich with the growth of fir, oak, rhododendron, and bamboos that all provide a wonderful green canopy to the travelers. As you reach Gyabla, a Tibetan settlement, you would be able to experience the Tibetan cultures and traditions of the people residing there. En-route to Ghunsa, you will pass through terraces of farms wet with the plantations of potatoes, wheat, barley and buckwheat. The sight is ravishing to see, especially since the view of the Kanchenjunga Peak shadows the natural telicity of the area. You would be acclimatizing here in your trekking journey.

Before trekking to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp lying at the height of 5388 m, we will traverse along moraines set north-west of the Kanchenjunga Glacier to reach Lhonak where the excellent mountain views are quite captivating. Reaching the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, the spectacular Kanchenjunga or Wedge Peak, cerulean Kanchenjunga trekking map and several other peaks will greet you, making it one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Also, we will traverse along several high passes like Mirgin La (4725m) and Sinion La (4460m) which is quite a challenging experience.

    Best Time For Kenchenjunga Trek

The Kanchenjunga trek is during autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May).

Autumn (September to November): This is the most popular time for trekking, offering stable weather, clear skies, and mild temperatures. It’s ideal for great mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions.

Spring (March to May): Spring also provides favorable weather with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The landscape is lush with blooming flowers, making it a scenic time to trek.

Both seasons avoid the extreme cold of winter and the heavy monsoon rains, making them the best for the Kanchenjunga trek.

Difficulty Level of the Kanchenjunga Trek

The Kanchenjunga trek is one of Nepal's most challenging and rewarding trekking routes. Known for its remote location and rugged terrain, it’s perfect for experienced trekkers looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The trek reaches altitudes over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet), increasing the risk of altitude sickness, so acclimatization is key. The journey usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks, requiring excellent physical fitness and mental resilience. The terrain is steep and varied, with narrow ridges, tough ascents, and descents, which makes it physically demanding. The weather can be unpredictable, especially at higher altitudes, with snow, rain, and strong winds, adding to the challenge. The Kanchenjunga trek also takes you through remote regions with limited facilities, so trekkers need to be self-sufficient. Although challenging, this trek offers stunning mountain views, unique culture, and solitude, making it a truly unforgettable experience for seasoned trekkers.

Why Choose A Kanchenjunga Trek In Nepal

The Kanchenjunga Trek is an exceptional adventure for seasoned trekkers seeking a remote, off-the-beaten-path experience in Nepal. Unlike the crowded trails of Everest and Annapurna, this trek offers solitude and pristine natural beauty. The route takes you through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, alpine meadows, and dramatic glacial valleys, with panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and even Everest.

For culture enthusiasts, the trek passes through remote Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa villages, allowing trekkers to immerse themselves in local traditions and customs. The rich biodiversity of the region, including rare species like the Red Panda and Himalayan Monal, makes it a paradise for wildlife lovers. With rugged terrain, high altitudes, and a trek duration of 3-4 weeks, Kanchenjunga is a physically demanding challenge ideal for experienced trekkers. If you're looking for an adventurous, unique trek away from the crowds, the Kanchenjunga Trek.

Should I Train For The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Training for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is essential due to its challenging terrain, steep ascents, and high altitude. To prepare, focus on cardio exercises like running or hiking to improve endurance. Strength training for legs, core, and upper body will help with long days on uneven terrain. Include hill workouts or stair climbing to simulate elevation changes. If possible, practice altitude training to adjust to reduced oxygen levels.

Regular hiking with a weighted backpack will help you get used to carrying gear over long distances. Additionally, building mental resilience is important, as the trek lasts 3-4 weeks and is physically and mentally demanding. Proper training ensures a safer, more enjoyable trek and increases your chances of success on the Kanchenjunga Trek.

      Gorgeous Views!

Excellent trekking experience with Escape Himalaya to Kala Patthar! Everything went seamlessly, and my guide ensured we were safe and comfortable at all times, even in the high altitude. Will definitely choose EH again when I am back in Nepal for more hiking! The country is so beautiful and just has so much to offer!

Amazing Manaslu Circuit with Phurba & Ram

Just back from a fantastic 2 week trek around the Manaslu Circuit including Larke Pass (5100m). The weather was perfect and the views were outstanding!!

Our guide Phurba Sherpa was excellent. Super knowledgeable and helpful at all times and always made sure we had a fantastic trip.

Our porter, Ram Badhadur Magar was also a rockstar. He was super professional and always arrived before us every day. He was also super friendly and helpful too.

Thanks to Phurba, Ram for always smiling and for a fantastic trip. Would highly recommend them to anyone interested in trekking in Nepal

      Everest base camp trek - Mar-Apr 2024

My 60 year old pals set out in hope on this adventure. In late March. We had our guide Raj Kumar and two porterd Janak and Ramesh. All three were stars. We changed our schedule - no problem. I would not have made it without Raj. I cannot thank him enough. Janak often took my back pack on steep climbs where I was struggling. This is a truly majestic and spiritual trek and I would encourage using Escape Himalaya and request this team of guide and porters if you want to give yourself the best chance of finishing and making best use of your time.

Q1. Do we need a visa before coming to Nepal?

Yes, most travelers need a visa to enter Nepal. However, the process for obtaining a visa depends on your nationality. You can either obtain a visa from the diplomatic consulate office of Nepal in your respective country or apply for an “On Arrival” visa at the entry checkpoints of Nepal. Please click this link to get more information on ways to issue a tourist visa. Also please see the visa fee here below:

On-Arrival Visa Fee at Entry Points of Nepal:

    • 15 Days – 30 USD
    • 30 Days – 50 USD
    • 90 Days – 125 USD

Indian nationals do not need to have a visa to enter Nepal however they need to bring an official document such as a Passport or Election card (issued by the Election Commission) that proves their identity.

Q2. Which one is better: Group or Solo (private) trek?

Escape Himalaya offers both group and solo trek to Everest Base Camp. However, to choose to join which tour style completely depends upon the traveler itself.

If you are happy to meet people from other parts of the world and join in an experience of a lifetime with fellow travelers, then going for a group trek is also best.

However, if you prefer freedom and flexibility, trekking solo (private) will give you the independence to set your own pace and choose your itinerary. You will have the flexibility to make spontaneous decisions. You will not be bound by a group schedule and choose to lead your journey as you wish and even modify the plan if needed.

Q3. Is a visa required for entry into Nepal?

Yes, the majority of travelers to Nepal will need a visa. You can acquire one upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land border crossings. Alternatively, you have the option to apply for a visa beforehand at a Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home country.

Q4. Will there be someone to pick me up at the airport when I arrive?

Yes, Escape Himalaya offers airport pickup services for our clients. We recognize the significance of a seamless arrival and strive to guarantee a trouble-free beginning to your journey. When you reserve a trek or tour with us, you can coordinate with our team to schedule a representative to greet you at the airport upon your arrival.

Look for our staff member holding a signboard bearing your name or the company's name for easy recognition. Providing us with your flight details ahead of time, including your flight number and estimated arrival time, enables us to make suitable arrangements for your pickup.

Certainly! As a solo traveler, you're welcome to join one of the groups organized by Escape Himalaya. We frequently arrange group treks and tours that cater to individuals traveling alone. When reaching out to Escape Himalaya, simply inform us that you're a solo traveler interested in joining a group. We'll then provide details about available group departures and assist you in selecting a trek or tour that aligns with your preferences and travel dates.

Q6. What are the types of hotel you use in Kathmandu?

Generally, we use the best available 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star category hotels for travelers' accommodation in Kathmandu. Meanwhile, travelers can upgrade or prolong accommodation with us as required.

The costs to prolong or upgrade hotel accommodation in Kathmandu may vary based on preferred hotel rates.

Q7. Would it be possible for me to upgrade my accommodation to a luxury hotel in Kathmandu?

Certainly! You have the option to upgrade your accommodation to a luxury hotel in Kathmandu. If you wish to elevate your stay from the standard 3-star hotel provided by Escape Himalaya, simply let us know, and we can arrange the upgrade for you. However, please bear in mind that availability and pricing for luxury hotels may fluctuate based on the hotel and the timing of your visit.

Q8. Which destinations are commonly favored by tourists visiting Nepal?

Nepal boasts breathtaking natural landscapes and a profound cultural legacy. Among the sought-after tourist spots are Kathmandu (the capital), Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Lumbini (the birthplace of Lord Buddha), Bhaktapur, as well as the renowned trekking regions of Annapurna, Everest, Langtang, Manaslu, and Upper Mustang.

Q9. What is your cancellation policy?

Escape Himalaya's cancellation policy states that the initial 20% deposit made upon booking is non-refundable and will be considered a cancellation fee. This policy is effective immediately upon booking confirmation. If you cancel your trip, this deposit is retained by Escape Himalaya.

However, if you have paid more than the 20% deposit, the cancellation fee will be reduced to 20%, and the remaining balance will be refunded via the original payment method.

Alternatively, they offer a flexible postponement policy. You can postpone your trip without any additional charge if you notify them at least one day before the scheduled departure. This allows you to reschedule your trip to a later date without losing your deposit.

Q10. Who will come to pick me up at the airport on arrival day?

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, one of our representative staff will be there to pick you up at the airport holding a display board of Escape Himalaya. This service is included in all their trekking packages to ensure a smooth and comfortable start to your adventure. The representative will escort you to your hotel, where you will be staying as per the package itinerary. For trekking in Nepal, you will need a 60-80 liter duffle bag made of durable, water-resistant material. Escape Himalaya provides a duffle bag for your gear, carried by porters. For your day pack, choose a 20-30 liter pack with adjustable straps, hydration compatibility, and multiple compartments. Ensure both bags are durable and comfortable for the trek.

Q13. What kind of trekking boots should I bring?

For trekking in Nepal, bring mid to high-cut waterproof boots with a breathable material like Gore-Tex. Ensure they have a snug fit, a lightweight design, and high-traction rubber soles like Vibram. Break them in before your trek to avoid blisters and discomfort.
