    Overview

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is a rare and unforgettable adventure into one of Nepal’s most isolated and preserved regions, perfect for those who wish to explore the majestic Himalayas without the physical demands of trekking. Tucked in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, Upper Mustang lies in north-central Nepal, bordering the Tibetan plateau. Once an illegal kingdom, it remained closed to outsiders until 1992, protecting its one-of-a-kind character and social legacy for centuries.

Geologically, Upper Mustang is a high-altitude desert plateau extending from 2800 to over 4000 meters in elevation. Its landscape is marked by dry cliffs, profound canyons, rugged formations, and ancient caves carved into the slopes. The region’s dry, sensational scenes are not at all like any other in Nepal, frequently compared to Tibet both in appearance and social feel. The jeep travel starts from Pokhara and takes travelers through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the most profound gorges in the world, passing charming mountain towns like Jomsom, Kagbeni, and eventually coming to the walled city of Lo Manthang, the old capital of Mustang.

Socially, Upper Mustang is a treasure trove of Tibetan-Buddhist conventions that have remained untouched for centuries. The individuals, known as the Loba community, share deep-rooted otherworldly convictions, and their way of life reflects centuries-old traditions acquired from Tibet. You’ll experience centuries-old cloisters such as Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Lhakhang, as well as sky caves utilized for contemplation and burial ceremonies, offering profound understanding into Mustang’s otherworldly scene. The region’s verifiable esteem is similarly profound—it was once an important trade route between Nepal and Tibet, and its key area permitted it to prosper as a free kingdom with its own illustrious family, whose royal residence still stands in Lo Manthang.

As for common magnificence, the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour offers a few of the most dreamlike and differentiating sceneries in Nepal. Picture tremendous leaf valleys, wind-eroded cliffs in tones of orange and ruddy, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and wide open skies. Each day on the tour, the seas alter dramatically—from green riverbanks and apple plantations to uncovered slopes and antiquated stone towns. This stark but dazzling scene is regularly portrayed as strolling through a living portrait.

The jeep travel is planned to give the most extreme comfort, permitting travelers to immerse themselves completely in Mustang’s magical environment. Major highlights of the tour include the sacred Muktinath Sanctuary, a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists; the colorful town of Kagbeni, which serves as the official section point into Upper Mustang; and Lo Manthang, a captivating walled city home to quaint rear ways, impressive engineering, and kind-hearted local people.

Extra attractions include the secretive Sky Caves of Chooser, a few of which date back over 2,000 years, and the Tiji Celebration (if you’re fortunate to tour in May), a dynamic three-day social celebration with veil moves and sacred ceremonies. You’ll also get to investigate Ghami, the third-largest town in Mustang, known for its white-washed houses, supplication dividers, and emotional cliffs, as well as Charang, a tranquil settlement with an antiquated religious community and a chronicled fortification.

The tour offers the chance to see tall Himalayan peaks like Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna from an interesting northern viewpoint. What makes the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour genuinely uncommon is its mix of ease, experience, culture, and disconnection. It is perfect for families, picture takers, and social devotees who need a profound and important Himalayan experience without multi-day climbing.

With each mile, the street tells a story—from Tibetan Buddhist conventions and antiquated legends to illustrious stories and otherworldly riddles. Traveling by jeep permits guests to cover tremendous distances effectively while still stopping at each key point for investigation and photography. Whether it’s tasting butter tea with local people, strolling through antiquated passages of stone homes, or looking at stars in the hush of the Himalayan night, each minute in Upper Mustang feels like venturing back in time. The region’s remoteness has made a difference in ensuring its conventions and excellence, making it one of the final places on Earth where you can witness living Tibetan culture in such crude and true shape.

In a nutshell, the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is more than a touring journey—it’s a profound social submersion and visual devour set in one of Nepal’s most interesting and mysterious scenes. It combines old history, otherworldly profundity, tough excellence, and illustrious legacy in a way that no other destination in Nepal can offer, all while giving you the consolation and ease of street travel in a 4WD vehicle. Whether you're a prepared traveler or going by the Himalayas to begin with, this tour will leave an enduring impression that goes distant beyond the travel itself—it touches the soul.

From Pokhara (822 m) to Kagbeni (2,804 m) via Jomsom Distance: 160 km, Duration: 8–9 hours

We head out of Pokhara before sunrise in our jeep, following the winding mountain road through verdant green hills until Beni. From Beni to Jomsom, the asphalt gives way to dusty gravel along the Kali Gandaki gorge—expect jostling bumps and riverside crossings. Jomsom sits at 2,736 m in a windy river basin, known for its apple orchards and sudden gusts .

After a short break in Jomsom, it's another hour north to Kagbeni—one of Nepal's oldest stone villages at 2,804 m. We arrive in the late afternoon to narrow mud-brick alleys, fluttering prayer flags, and a small gompa by the river’s edge. The village feels like the threshold of another world—the gateway to Upper Mustang. We'll stay overnight in a cozy teahouse and settle in for the journey ahead.

The final stretch brings you to Ghami, a quiet village backed by red and grey sandstone cliffs. Here, the longest mani wall in Upper Mustang snakes through barley fields, and tiny chortens cluster around an old monastery

      6Day 06

Day 6: From Ghami (3,520 m) to Lo Manthang (3,840 m) via Tsarang and Lo La Pass (3,950 m) Distance: 17 km Duration: 4–5 hours (jeep)

After breakfast in Ghami, we begin the drive out past the Ghami Khola. Right after the bridge, long rows of mani walls line the dusty jeep track, with prayer stones stacked neatly, each carved by hand. The road gradually rises toward the plateau. It’s dry, windy, and open out here.

After about two hours, we reach Tsarang (Charang)—a quiet, spread-out village with a big red monastery and an old palace sitting on the ridge. The place feels heavy with age. We stop for tea and explore a bit before heading up again.

The jeep climbs slowly up to Lo La Pass (3,950 m). As you crest the ridge, Lo Manthang reveals itself below—a cluster of flat-roofed homes inside tall earthen walls, with chortens lining the outskirts. You’ll see Annapurna, Nilgiri, Tilicho, and even Bhrikuti Himal standing tall in the far background.

Explore Lo Manthang – History and Culture

Today is all about exploring Lo Manthang, the old capital of the former Mustang kingdom. After breakfast, the day starts with a walk to the 4-story royal palace, which still houses some members of the former royal family.

From there, you’ll visit Jampa Lhakhang, the oldest monastery in Lo, built in the 15th century. Inside, there are big Buddha statues, old mandala paintings, and faded murals. You’ll also visit other important monasteries like Chodey Gompa (linked to the monastic school) and Thubchen Gompa, known for its large prayer hall.

If time allows, you can take a jeep or ride a horse to Chhoser village, about 30 minutes away. This area is known for its multi-story cave dwellings dug into the cliff—locals say they’re over 2,500 years old.

Back in town, locals go about their day—spinning prayer wheels, tending animals, or sitting quietly in the sun. The air feels dry and clean, and the whole place holds a peaceful silence that’s hard to find elsewhere. You’ll stay overnight in Lo Manthang again.

      8Day 08

Drive from Lo Manthang (3,840 m) to Jomsom (2,743 m) Distance: ~65 km Driving Duration: 6–7 hours

After breakfast, you leave Lo Manthang behind and begin the long drive back toward Jomsom. The route retraces through Lo La Pass and drops slowly past Tsarang and Ghami. You’ll see the same dry cliffs, dusty jeep tracks, and scattered chortens—but from a different angle.

Lunch stop is usually at Chhusang, where the red cliffs still hold ancient cave dwellings. From there, the road hugs the Kali Gandaki River all the way south. The wind picks up strong after midday, especially around Jomsom, so the earlier you leave, the better.

        9Day 09

Drive from Jomsom (2,743 m) to Pokhara (822 m) Distance: ~155 km Driving Duration: 8–9 hours

After breakfast in Jomsom, you start the journey back to Pokhara by jeep. The road follows the Kali Gandaki River, passing through Marpha—famous for apples and stone-lined alleys—and then drops steadily through Tukuche, Ghasa, and Tatopani, where you’ll notice the air getting warmer and greener.

It’s a rough, bumpy road in places, but the changing scenery—from high desert to forested hills—is worth it. By late afternoon or early evening, you reach Pokhara. After days of dust and mountain air, the lakeside breeze, hot shower, and relaxed energy of the town feel like a reward.

          Everest base camp trek - Mar-Apr 2024

My 60 year old pals set out in hope on this adventure. In late March. We had our guide Raj Kumar and two porterd Janak and Ramesh. All three were stars. We changed our schedule - no problem. I would not have made it without Raj. I cannot thank him enough. Janak often took my back pack on steep climbs where I was struggling. This is a truly majestic and spiritual trek and I would encourage using Escape Himalaya and request this team of guide and porters if you want to give yourself the best chance of finishing and making best use of your time.
