    Poonhill Trek 4 Days Itinerary

Day 01: From Pokhara Drive to Nayapul, Trek to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri

Distance: Approx. 1.5-hour drive + 3-4 hours of trekking

    Elevation: Nayapul (1,070m) → Tikhedhunga (1,540m) or Ulleri (1,960m)

    The Journey Begins

Your adventure kicks off in Pokhara, where you'll board a vehicle for the 1.5-hour scenic drive to Nayapul. The road winds alongside the Modi River, offering glimpses of traditional Nepali villages and lush landscapes. Upon reaching Nayapul, you’ll begin your trek, marking the start of your Himalayan adventure.

    Trekking to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri

The trek from Nayapul begins with a gentle ascent, passing through terraced fields and vibrant farmland where you might see farmers working their crops. The path is well-defined and gradually climbs to the small village of Tikhedhunga, situated at around 1,540 meters. Here, you can take a short break and enjoy some refreshments before continuing your journey.

From Tikhedhunga, the trail becomes steeper as you begin your climb to Ulleri. This village, located at 1,960 meters, offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains, including the Annapurna range. Ulleri is a charming village with stone-paved pathways and traditional houses, offering a peaceful atmosphere for your first night.

    Highlights of Day 01:

    • Scenic drive from Pokhara to Nayapul along the Modi River.
    • Gradual ascent through terraced fields, where you may encounter farmers working.

    Day 02: Ulleri to Ghorepani

    Distance: 5-6 hours of trekking

    Elevation: Ulleri (1,960m) → Ghorepani (2,850m)

    A Challenging Ascent

On Day 2, the trek becomes more demanding as you continue to ascend into the mountains. The first section of the trail takes you through dense rhododendron forests, which are particularly stunning in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom, turning the entire landscape into a riot of color. As you climb higher, the forest gives way to more open terrain, offering views of Annapurna South and other towering peaks in the Annapurna range.

Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages and meet local Gurung people, known for their hospitality. You might stop for a brief rest, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and watch the daily life of these mountain communities unfold.

After several hours of trekking, you'll arrive at Ghorepani, a popular stop for trekkers. At 2,850 meters, Ghorepani offers spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machapuchare. It’s an ideal place to rest and prepare for the much-anticipated sunrise at Poonhill the next day.

    Highlights of Day 02:

    • Rhododendron forests: A magical forest, especially during the spring bloom.
    • Encounter with the Gurung people, who have a rich culture and history.

    Distance: 6-7 hours of trekking

    Elevation: Ghorepani (2,850m) → Poonhill (3,210m) → Tadapani (2,630m)

An Early Start for the Sunrise at Poonhill

This is one of the most exciting days of the trek! You’ll wake up early and begin your ascent to Poonhill (3,210 meters), known for its panoramic sunrise views. The hike to the top takes about an hour, and though it’s steep, the rewards are well worth the effort. As the sun rises, the entire Annapurna massif and Machapuchare (Fishtail Peak) bathe in golden light, creating a view that is nothing short of spectacular.

The morning light illuminates the peaks of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and several other snow-capped giants. Take your time to enjoy this breathtaking sight—this is one of the most iconic views in all of Nepal. After spending time at the top, you’ll descend back to Ghorepani for a hearty breakfast.

    Trekking to Tadapani

After breakfast, the trail continues through lush forests, past small settlements, and over streams. The path takes you to Tadapani, a village located at 2,630 meters. The walk is mostly downhill, although there are some short ascents along the way. You’ll pass through more rhododendron and oak forests, where you might hear the calls of Himalayan wildlife and catch glimpses of birds flitting through the trees.

Tadapani is a peaceful spot to relax, with amazing views of the surrounding peaks. It is a smaller village compared to Ghorepani, providing a more intimate, rural experience.

    Highlights of Day 03:

    • Poonhill Sunrise: One of the most magnificent sunrise views in Nepal.
    • Trekking through quiet forests: Ideal for birdwatching and nature lovers.
    • The charming village of Tadapani with incredible views of Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

    The Final Stretch

On the final day of your trek, you’ll begin by descending from Tadapani toward Ghandruk (1,940 meters). The trail descends steadily through terraced fields, small farming villages, and dense forests. Ghandruk is a picturesque village with traditional stone houses, stunning views of the Annapurna South, and Machapuchare. It is one of the most popular villages on the trail, and you can explore the area’s culture, including its local Gurung heritage.

After a short rest in Ghandruk, you’ll continue your descent to the roadhead. A vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Pokhara, where you can reflect on your amazing journey over a well-earned meal.

    Why Choose the Poonhill Trek?

    Ideal for Beginners

The Poonhill trek is perfect for trekkers who are new to the Himalayas. Its gradual ascent and relatively short duration make it manageable even for those with no previous trekking experience.

    Family-Friendly and Kid-Friendly

Poonhill is known for being accessible to families with children. The well-maintained trails, moderate altitude, and gradual ascents allow children to enjoy the trek without too much strain.

    A Short Yet Fulfilling Vacation

For travelers on a tight schedule, the Poonhill trek offers a quick yet rewarding experience. It provides a unique combination of mountain views, cultural exploration, and outdoor adventure in a short timeframe.

Why the Poonhill Trek is Kid-Friendly

    1. Moderate and Manageable Difficulty: Unlike many longer and more strenuous treks in Nepal, the Poonhill trek is designed for trekkers of all ages and fitness levels, making it perfect for children.
    2. Short Duration (4 Days): The Poonhill trek lasts just four days, which is manageable for children who may struggle with longer treks.
    3. Comfortable Accommodations: Throughout the Poonhill trek, the trail is dotted with well-established teahouses and lodges that provide a comfortable resting place after a day’s trek.

Best Time to Trek to Poonhill

The best times to trek to Poonhill are during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons. These months offer the clearest skies, mild temperatures, and the best views of the mountains. Trekking during these months ensures a comfortable experience with excellent visibility.

    • Spring (March-May): Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C, and rhododendrons bloom in the forests.
    • Autumn (September-November): Clear skies, perfect trekking weather with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C.
    • Winter (December-February): Snow may make trekking difficult, but it offers a quieter trail and a peaceful experience.
    • Monsoon (June-August): Avoid trekking during the monsoon season as trails are slippery and visibility is reduced.

Rhododendron Forests: Nature's vibrant artwork on the Poonhill Trail

    Poonhill Rhododendron
    Taking Rhododendron Pictures

A major highlight of the Poonhill trail is passing Nepal's lovely rhododendron forests, especially the area between Ulleri and Ghorepani. These ancient woods have a gorgeous makeover as they bloom in spring, i.e., from mid-March to late May, with the flower peak in April. At that time, hikers basically stroll under flower canopies with reds, pinks, whites, and crimsons decorating the branches as the rhododendrons give the deep greens a very vivid and fresh look. Besides, there is the snowy mountain range forming the background here. The forests carry over 30 species of rhododendrons. Some of those trees have their tops 15 meters high, while their twisted limbs create natural tunnels along the path.

Near Ulleri at the lower slopes, the flowering happens earlier. When the higher-altitude rhododendrons in the vicinity of Ghorepani start showing their colors in April, the spectacle lasts till the beginning of May. When the flowering is at its fullest, the ground of the forest becomes a multicolored carpet of the petals that have fallen, while the scent of the flowers fills the fresh mountain air. Not only do these forests have rhododendrons, but they also offer a calm hiking experience throughout the year.

What Permits Do You Need for the Poonhill Trek?

To trek to Poonhill, you will need two essential permits:

    • TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) Card: A permit to ensure safety and record trekkers' details.
    • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): This protects the natural environment of the Annapurna region and supports local communities.

Both permits can be obtained at the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

    Permit Type Price (NPR) Description
Foreign Nationals (Individual) 3,000 NPR For individual trekkers visiting the Annapurna Conservation Area
Foreign Nationals (Group) 2,000 NPR per person For foreign nationals trekking as a group
SAARC Nationals 1,000 NPR For trekkers from SAARC countries (excluding India)
Indian Nationals 1000 NPR For trekkers from India
